International Seminar on Environmental Public Participation Dilemma and Its Solution during the Green Transformation of China

On Aug.5th, 2014, the Center of Environmental Education and Communications ( CEEC) , in cooperation with EU-China Environmental Governance Programme(EGP), held an International Seminar on Environmental Public Participation Dilemma and Its Solution during the Green Transformation of China. Hosted by Mr. Jia Feng, director-general of CEEC., the seminar was opened by Mr. Yuan Qingdan, deputy director of Policy Research of Environment and Economics( PRCEE) and director of EGP.  
 

Invited by EGP, Mr. Helmut Kranzmaier from German Communications & Network Consulting AG attended the event to share his insights on the importance of Communication Strategy and Public Participation by introducing their strategy against the Stuttgart 21 mass incident. Other Chinese experts in the field, including Dr. Yu Jianrong and Dr. Shan Guangnai from Chinese Academy of Social Sciencesalso spoke at the seminar on the theme of “The Difficulties and Solution of Public Participation in We-media Era” and “Public Participation Experience of Xudabao Nuclear Power Project respectively” 

The seminar also invited representatives from local government and private sectors involved in mass incidents earlier, such as the former director of Xiamen Environmental Protection Bureau during the PX incident, officials in charge during the Molybdenum Copper Mine Project incident from Shifang City, Sichuan, as well as representatives from Sinopec Maoming Branch, Sinopec Zhenhai Branch and China National Nuclear Corporation to share their experiences and lessons-learned. Other international and domestic experts including Dr. Hong Dayong, deputy president of Renmin University of China, Prof. Zeng Fanxu from Tsinghua School of Journalism and Communications, Director Ma Jun from Institute of Public and Environment Affairs ,Mr. Richard Hardiman, EGP Expert, Prof. Sabine Schlacke from University of Munster and Dr. Barth Regine from German Oeko-Institute attended the seminar and participated in heated discussions. Other participants include representatives from local Center of Environmental Education and Communications.
