Pilot Judges’ Training Hold in Guilin by EGP Partnership Project

A Pilot Judges’ Training Course of the EGP Partnership Project “Development of Training Curricula and Organisation of Training Courses for Judges in Environmental Law in Shaanxi, Guangxi and Gansu” was held successfully in Guilin, Guangxi Province from July 16-18 2014.

The project is jointly implemented by the Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme of GIZ and the Institute of Environmental Law at the Northwest University of Politics and Law, Xian. Mr. Dai Hongbing, vice dean of the Guangxi High Court, provided opening remarks during the training. EGP environmental governance expert Mr. Richard Hardiman also attended the training and provided guidance to the judges and project team.

The three day training covered both theoretical and practical content. Training on theory and application of environmental justice was provided by the project’s environmental law experts, while case-focused, practical training was provided by judges’ trained during the project’s previous pilot training from May 19-23 in Xi’an. Specific content covered in the training included: overview of the revised environmental protection law; application of environmental justice in civil, administrative and criminal law; EU experiences in environmental law; and specialization of environmental justice. 

A total of 17 judges received training and were from Shaanxi Province (incl. Provincial High Court; Xi’an, Xianyang, Weinan and Tongchuan Intermediate Courts), Guangxi Province (incl. Provincial High Court; Guilin Intermediate Court) and Gansu Province (Provincial High Court).
