EGP Local PP Media Saloon from CEECZJ

The Public Participation in Zhejiang Project, one of EU-China EGP’s 15 local Partnership Projects, held its first media workshop in Taizhou, Zhejiang on Apr. 24th, 2013. 18 national and local, as well as overseas media partners were invited to the workshop, including People’s Daily, XinHua News Agency, China News Agency, China Environmental News, Zhejiang Daily, Zhejiang TV Station, Zhejiang Radio, Wen Wei Po and etc. The workshop was moderated by the director of the project, Mr. YU Wei from Zhejiang Environmental Education and Communications Center (CEECZJ). The EGP Visibility and Communications Expert, Ms. ZHANG HuiJun and officials from Taizhou EPB also participated in the event.


 Under the theme “Media Cooperation and Public Participation”, the workshop took opportunity to introduce to its media partners the overview, objectives, main activities and current progress of the project, with emphasis on the role of media cooperation during the implementation of the project. The discussion session followed focused on the building of a “Government - Media – Public” mechanism that combines management, supervision and dialogue together. Media representatives at the workshop agreed on the necessity of further improvement in the role of media in disseminating environmental knowledge, raising people’s awareness in public participation and in leading orderly public participation. Media should approach to heated environmental issues in time so as to take on its social responsibility to answer questions of the public and to inspire positive public activities. During the workshop, media participants showed great interests in in-depth reports in public participation experiences in heated environmental issues and expressed their hope of accomplishing a more responsiv “Government-Public” dialogue mechanism with the implementation of the EGP Programme to encourage more active public participation in environmental protection.


 Through communications with media partners, the media workshop offered the project a valuable opportunity to promote its JiaXing Mode, a mode of public participation in environmental protection and have raised the visibility and created further impacts of the project.
